Vorgee NT Open & Age Championships - coach’s report
A team of 12 swimmers
from the Alice Springs Swimming Club travelled to Darwin last week for the
Northern Territory Open & Age Championships. Ben Fuller, Taylor Chalker, Alana
Fuller, Ashley Hanlon, Darcy Kerr, Melanie Gunner, Melissa Johnston, Brad Van
Luenen, Jasper Edwards, Stella Taylor, Shannon Cross and Gus Muirhead. The
majority of this group was juniors who had not previously competed at this
level. They all swam very well and had their first taste of swimming heats and
backing up with finals. Quite a few of these swimmers swam huge personal best
times, which were especially pleasing, because some of them had only just
qualified for their events in the last two weeks leading up to this event.
12 year old Jasper
Edwards in his first season with the Alice Springs Swimming Club, did very well
to win a Bronze medal in the 11 year boys 200m IM, a personal best time by 14
seconds, and 10 year old Gus Muirhead took 12 seconds off his personal best time
to win Bronze in the 10 yr old boys 100m butterfly.
Alana Fuller also won a
Bronze medal in the 14 yr girls 200m IM and 15 yr old Ashley Hanlon won Bronze
in the 15yr girls 200m freestyle.
14 yr old Ben Fuller won
Gold in all 6 of his age group events (100m Fly, back, breast and free, 200m IM,
200m free), Gold in the open 100m backstroke, Silver in the open 50m and 200m
backstroke, and Bronze in the open 50m breaststroke. Ben also qualified for the
100m backstroke at the Australian Age Championships which will be held in April
at the Sydney Aquatic Centre. He had previously qualified for the 50m
freestyle. Ben will be joining six other Darwin swimmers who have also
qualified to represent the Northern Territory in Sydney next month.
The swimming club saw a
mass exodus of senior swimmers at the start of this year as they moved
interstate with their families or to interstate boarding schools, so it was
great to see some of our juniors step up and do so well at these championships.
Also held in Darwin on
the weekend was the Northern Territory 9 yrs and under Swimming Championships
and two of our younger swimmers attended this meet. 7 year old Ashlea Van
Luenen and 9 yr old Jarrod Cross both swam personal best times and Ashlea also
won silver for her three events.
Thanks to team Manager
Sue Van Luenen, and all the other parents who helped out officiating,
timekeeping etc. over the weekend.

Katherine Carnival 2009 –
Coach’s report
Once again our club enjoyed a
successful trip to Katherine on the weekend for their annual Birthday
Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to all swimmers who traveled to
Katherine, especially our young swimmers for whom this was their first
trip away with the team.
21 swimmers swam in 89
individual events and came up with 41 personal best swims. Just about
every swimmer had at least 1 PB and quite a number of you had lots.
Considering our late start to the season and the very cold water
temperatures you have had to endure, I think you have done very well.
Even our more senior swimmers, who I wasn’t expecting too much from at
this early stage in the season, did very well to pull out the times that
they did. Just imagine what you could do with a year round facility.
Overall our club came 6th
out of 8 teams. 7 first place, 16 second place and 13 third place awards
went to individuals. Our senior boys and junior girls relay teams only
narrowly missed out on medals.
Our team captains did a great
job leading the warm-ups and March Past and thanks also to our team
managers, Lea Pass and Sue Van Luenen. I’d also like to thank all our
other parent helpers for a job well done.
A special mention should also go
to David Chalker who received a Service Award from Swimming NT for all
the work he has done over the past few years.

Katherine Carnival 2008
Congratulations to all the swimmers who traveled to Katherine on the
weekend for our first carnival of the season. I was proud of your
efforts in the water and your behaviour and team spirit out of the
water.
24 swimmers swam in 100 individual events and came up with 61 personal
best swims. Just about every swimmer had at least 1 PB and quite a
number of you had lots. Some of the older swimmers were a bit
disappointed in a few of their swims; however, you need to remember we
had a late start to the season and then were interrupted with the
Masters Games. Other NT clubs have been in the water for a lot longer
than us. All this considered so early in the season, I think we did very
well as a team.
Overall our club came 4th out of 8 teams. 8 first place, 13
second place and 19 third place awards to individuals. Our senior boys
and girls relay teams only narrowly missed out on medals.
Taylor Chalker received the Age aggregate for 15 year old girls,
Rebecca Collins runner up for 16 yr old girls and Liam &
Ben tied for runner up in the 13 yr old boys.
Standout improvers for the weekend were Sean Nieuwenhoven, Liam
MacGillivray, Alana Fuller, Charlotte White, Jordan Hickey, Teagan
Hancock and Gus Muirhead.
Our team captains did a great job and thanks also to Moogie Curtis
our team manager, Lisa Fuller (part-time swimmer / part-time
assistant team manager) and all the other parent helpers on the weekend.
Look out for flyer and entry form for Tennant Creek Carnival 8th & 9th
November.
:) Happy Swimming,
Fiona
